Gabe Shares Experiences From The Great British Bake Off Tent

A Journey Of Baking And Identity

Participating in the latest season of The Great British Bake Off has been a transformative experience for Gabe, a drag performer who describes the atmosphere of the competition as exhilarating. Originally from Grimsby, Gabe has called Birmingham home for the last 15 years and takes great pride in representing the city on a national stage. Alongside fellow contestant Mo and presenter Alison Hammond, Gabe is one of the three individuals from Birmingham appearing in the current series, bringing a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for the local culinary heritage.

For Gabe, the opportunity to showcase the food history of their adopted city was a priority. This was most evident during the creation of a Balti pie, a dish that pays homage to the one-pot meal invented half a century ago in Birmingham’s Balti triangle. Gabe expressed that representing the city in such a significant way was a fabulous experience, reflecting a desire to honor the diverse and rich food culture that defines the region.

Navigating The Pressures Of The Tent

Despite the high stakes and the intense pressure of the competition, Gabe has found humor in the challenges faced by the contestants. Bread Week stood out as a personal favorite, even though it was characterized by a series of mishaps where multiple bakers struggled with raw dough. Gabe recalled the collective relief the group felt after a particularly difficult technical challenge involving flatbreads, where almost no one succeeded. This shared failure allowed the contestants to relax and enjoy the process, though Gabe jokingly suggested that judge Paul might have been intentionally making the tasks difficult for them.

Beyond the baking, Gabe has used the platform to be open about their personal life and identity. Performing under the drag name Blü-Romantic, the self-styled “daddy of Birmingham drag” has spoken candidly about living in a non-traditional relationship with two partners, Ellis and Tyler. Gabe refers to their partnership as a “boy band” to avoid the perceived awkwardness of other terms and to position themselves as the frontman of the group. While they anticipated some backlash for living outside social norms, Gabe noted that the public reaction has been generally positive, particularly from others in non-traditional relationships.

Artistic Expression And Judging

One of the most memorable moments for Gabe occurred during the first week of the competition. They created a self-portrait cake that incorporated a drag persona, featuring a replica mirror that the judges had to smash to reveal a hand-painted likeness of Gabe. This artistic approach received high praise from judge Nigella Lawson, who described the work as “profound.” For Gabe, receiving such a compliment from someone they consider an icon was a highlight of the experience, noting that Nigella is someone who could do no wrong in their eyes.

Having been inspired to start baking after watching the very first series of the show at age 13, Gabe’s presence in the tent represents a long-term dream realized. As one of the six remaining contestants, they continue to navigate the technical demands of the competition while maintaining their sense of humor and authenticity. The blend of high-pressure baking and personal storytelling has made their time in the tent a significant milestone in both their culinary and personal journey.

As the competition progresses, Gabe remains focused on the joy of baking and the connections made with fellow contestants. The experience has allowed them to merge their passion for drag and dessert, proving that creativity in the kitchen can take many forms. With the support of their partners and the community in Birmingham, Gabe continues to compete with a spirit of fun and resilience.
