Alton Towers Closes The World Of David Walliams Attraction

End Of An Era At Alton Towers

Alton Towers Resort has officially announced the permanent closure of The World of David Walliams. The themed section of the Staffordshire resort, which first welcomed visitors in 2021, ceased operations on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The decision comes as the peak season for the park concludes, leading the management to evaluate the current state of its various offerings and the overall guest experience.

Merlin Entertainments, the company that owns the park, stated that the closure follows a regular review of the rides and attractions across the resort. The decision was reached after considering a variety of operational factors and guest experience considerations. While the area is now closed, the park has not yet detailed what will replace the themed section, noting that future plans for the space will be revealed once they have been finalized and confirmed by the creative team.

A Journey Through Children’s Literature

The World of David Walliams was developed over several years through a collaboration between the park’s creative team, the author himself, and HarperCollins Children’s Books. The attraction aimed to bring the imaginative worlds of Walliams’ popular children’s stories to life, providing a multi-sensory experience for families and young readers who wanted to step inside the narratives they had read.

Among the most prominent features of the area was Gangsta Granny: The Ride. This 360-degree special effects attraction allowed guests to join the main characters in a daring attempt to pull off a massive heist to steal the Crown Jewels. In addition to this flagship ride, the area featured several other attractions designed to appeal to children, including Raj’s Bouncy Bottom Burp, the Royal Carousel, and Flavio’s Fabulous Fandango. The themed zone also included dining and shopping options, such as The Burger Kitchen and Raj’s Shop, creating a fully immersive environment based on the author’s extensive bibliography.

The Legacy Of David Walliams

David Walliams is recognized as one of the most successful children’s authors in the United Kingdom. His literary career began in 2008 when HarperCollins published his first children’s book, The Boy in the Dress. Since then, he has published more than 40 books, including titles such as Billionaire Boy and Fing. His work has achieved massive global success, with more than 60 million copies sold worldwide and translations available in 55 different languages.

Beyond the pages of his books, Walliams’ stories have found success on screen. Gangsta Granny, for instance, was adapted into a television special in 2013, followed by a sequel starring Sheridan Smith in 2022. Before his success as an author, Walliams gained widespread fame in the early 2000s as a comedian and actor, most notably appearing in the sketch show Little Britain alongside Matt Lucas, as well as the program Come Fly With Me.

Recent Developments And Transitions

The closure of the attraction follows a period of transition for the author. In December 2025, HarperCollins ended its professional relationship with Walliams following an investigation into allegations regarding his behavior toward young women. Walliams has strongly denied these allegations of inappropriate behavior, stating that he was not informed of the allegations nor given an opportunity to answer questions during any investigation, and he has since taken legal advice.

Additionally, Walliams’ career in television saw changes when he departed from his role as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent in 2022. This followed an apology for comments made about contestants during filming breaks in January 2020 at the London Palladium. By 2023, the production company Fremantle reached an amicable resolution with the author following the leak of those remarks.

As the park moves forward, guests are encouraged to use the official app and website to check for the latest attraction opening information, as the resort continues to adjust its offerings outside of the main tourist season to ensure the best possible visitor experience.
