Poland Increases Border Security Measures

Enhanced Border Infrastructure And Security
Poland has significantly intensified its security presence and infrastructure along its eastern border to prevent unauthorized entry. A primary component of this strategy was the construction of a 186-kilometer steel wall, completed in 2022, designed to prevent irregular crossings along a border that spans 416 kilometers in total. Despite the installation of this physical barrier, reports indicate that individuals continue to attempt to enter the territory, often navigating the challenging and dangerous terrain of the Bialowieza Forest.
The environment in eastern Poland presents severe natural hazards to those attempting to cross. The region is characterized by dense forests and extensive swamps that make movement difficult. During the summer months, extreme heat and a lack of potable water create dangerous conditions for those on the move, while winter temperatures can plummet to minus 20 degrees Celsius. These environmental factors make survival nearly impossible for those without proper equipment, guidance, or shelter.
Legal Framework And Humanitarian Concerns
In 2021, the Polish parliament enacted legislation that granted border guards the authority to immediately expel individuals who cross the border irregularly. This law allows authorities to refuse applications for international asylum without a formal examination process. This legal shift has effectively formalized the practice of pushbacks, where migrants are returned to the other side of the border immediately upon detection, regardless of their individual circumstances or needs.
Humanitarian activists have raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of people at the border. Some reports allege that individuals have faced violence, including being beaten by border guards, bitten by dogs, and having their money taken away. There are also claims that mobile phones are destroyed so that individuals can no longer communicate with the outside world, all intended to discourage further attempts to enter. However, official spokespersons for the border guards have denied these allegations of violence, stating that there are no formal complaints against officers and encouraging anyone with grievances to seek redress through the court system.
The human cost of these border dynamics is evident in the recovery of at least 48 bodies over the last two years. Many individuals remain at risk in the forest, including vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women. Activists have reported helping hundreds of people, including those with broken legs or arms, for whom crossing the forest is significantly more complicated and perilous.
Regional Context And Political Influence
Poland’s border situation is part of a broader regional trend involving neighboring states. Nearby Lithuania has also increased its deployment of border guards, particularly ahead of major diplomatic events like the NATO summit in Vilnius. Lithuanian officials have noted an increase in irregular migration activity along the borders shared with Poland and Latvia, suggesting that migrants may be diverted to create tensions within the territory and cause instability.
Domestically, the issue of border security has become a central theme in Polish politics. Both the ruling nationalist Law and Justice party and the main opposition have adopted strong anti-migration rhetoric. This political climate has seen various leaders emphasizing the need for the country to maintain strict control over its borders as part of their campaign strategies ahead of parliamentary elections, with the opposition accusing the government of hypocrisy regarding its approach to migration.
Parallel to these security measures, the region has dealt with a massive influx of displaced people. Data indicates that over 4 million people fleeing the conflict in the east have received temporary protection across Europe. Poland has been one of the primary hosts for these individuals, accounting for 25% of the total, alongside Germany and Czechia. This creates a complex landscape where the state manages a high volume of protected refugees while simultaneously maintaining a rigid and militarized stance against irregular migration at the eastern frontier. The combination of steel walls, restrictive legislation, and heightened surveillance reflects a comprehensive effort to secure the perimeter against unauthorized entry.
