Rafa Camara To Make Formula 1 Debut At Brazil Grand Prix

New Driver For Haas In Brazil
The Haas F1 team has announced a significant change to its driver lineup for the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Rafa Camara, a Ferrari junior and current leader of the Formula 2 standings, will make his Formula 1 debut at the Interlagos circuit. This move comes as the team confirms that Esteban Ocon will not return to a race seat for the remainder of the 2026 season. The decision follows a period of increasingly strained relations between Ocon and the team management, culminating in a heated argument during the Mexico City event that led team principal Ayao Komatsu to remove the Frenchman from the squad.
Komatsu stated that the decision was not made lightly but was deemed to be in the best interest of the team moving forward. While the specific details of the conversations between the team and Ocon remain an internal matter, it is clear that the relationship has reached a breaking point. Ocon, who is a free agent next year, will now sit out the final races of the calendar. This sudden vacancy opens the door for Camara to begin his top-flight career several months earlier than originally planned, as he had already been signed to join the team for the 2027 season.
Preparation And Testing
Although this will be his first official race weekend, Camara is not entering the high-pressure environment of a home debut without preparation. He has extensive experience with Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outings throughout the season. Specifically, he has completed five such sessions, four of which were in the Ferrari SF-25 and one in the Haas VF-25. The test in the VF-25 took place in August at Portimao in Portugal, where his natural ability and performance left a strong impression on the American-owned team.
Camara had already been placed on standby during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend following Ocon’s initial removal. During that event, the team utilized reserve driver and Toyota protege Ryo Hirakawa as a temporary replacement. Hirakawa made a successful debut in Mexico, securing a point by finishing in 10th place. The final confirmation for Camara to take over the wheel of the VF-26 in Brazil was granted on Tuesday afternoon, marking a pivotal moment for the young driver’s career.
Future Lineup And Ferrari Impact
Looking ahead to the final stages of the season, the team has not yet confirmed the driver assignments for the remaining rounds in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. It is expected that the team will use a combination of both Camara and Hirakawa to fill the vacant seat. For the Brazil event, Camara will drive alongside Ollie Bearman, providing the team with a fresh dynamic as they evaluate their young talent. The team is eager to see how Camara adapts to the VF-26 under the intense pressure of a race weekend.
The shift in plans has also created a ripple effect for Ferrari. Because Camara is now occupied with his race debut for Haas, the Friday morning Free Practice 1 session that was originally allocated to him has been reassigned. Dino Beganovic, a Swedish driver, will now take that opportunity to drive the Maranello team’s car, gaining valuable experience in a Formula 1 machine. This adjustment ensures that Ferrari continues to develop its junior talent while Camara focuses on his immediate debut.
By promoting Camara early, Haas is accelerating the integration of a driver who has already proven his speed in the junior categories and during private testing. The Brazilian driver now faces the unique challenge of debuting in front of his home crowd, utilizing the VF-26 to showcase the skills that earned him a full-time seat for 2027. The team remains focused on maximizing their performance through these rookie appearances as they close out the 2026 campaign, hoping that the early start for Camara will benefit the squad’s long-term goals.
