Ios 27.3 Brings New Standby Features To More Iphones

Expanded StandBy Experience For All Users

Apple has released the first developer beta for iOS 27.3, introducing a significant expansion of the StandBy mode features. Originally launched as an exclusive highlight for the iPhone Duo, the redesigned StandBy experience is now being brought to a wider range of devices. This update ensures that users of older hardware can access the same sophisticated visual tools and customization options previously reserved for the latest foldable hardware.

StandBy mode, which first appeared in iOS 17, transforms the iPhone into a functional smart display when the device is placed horizontally while charging. It effectively turns the phone into a bedside clock or a desk companion that provides information at a glance. While previous versions of StandBy offered basic clock, widget, and photo views, the new update brings a level of depth and personalization that was previously unavailable to most users.

New Customization And Visual Options

With the arrival of iOS 27.3, users with an iPhone 11 or newer will gain access to updated Analog and Digital Clock faces. These redesigned faces offer expanded options for customizing colors and complications, allowing users to tailor the look of their display to their specific preferences. Beyond the clocks, Apple is introducing entirely new faces dedicated to Calendar and Weather, providing more utility for those who use their devices as stationary information hubs.

The update also brings significant improvements to the Photos face. Users can now integrate Shared Albums into their StandBy display, giving them the ability to choose exactly which shared memories appear while the device is in landscape mode. This adds a social and personal dimension to the smart display experience, moving beyond the standard local photo library.

One of the most practical additions for users of the iPhone 11 and later is the ability to create multiple versions of the same StandBy face. Each version can have its own unique set of customization options. This means a user could have one version of a clock face optimized for a nightstand and another optimized for a workspace, simply swiping between them to change the configuration instantly.

Broader System Improvements In Ios 27.3

While the expansion of StandBy is a primary focus, iOS 27.3 includes several other system-wide enhancements. The update introduces vertical tabs in Safari, aiming to improve navigation for users who keep many browser tabs open simultaneously. Additionally, the update reintroduces a redesigned Health app and enables specific Apple Intelligence features for users in China, showing a commitment to refining the user interface and expanding AI capabilities across different regions.

It is worth noting that while these software features are coming to standard iPhones, the iPhone Duo continues to offer unique hardware-integrated capabilities. On the foldable device, StandBy can function without a charger when the phone is folded like a book or a tent, allowing the hardware to act as its own stand. This is a distinct advantage of the foldable form factor, as standard iPhones still require a charger to maintain StandBy mode. The iPhone Duo also utilizes a vertically positioned Dynamic Island that works across both screens and supports side-by-side multitasking through Split View, allowing two different apps or two windows from the same app to run simultaneously.

Despite these hardware differences, the software-based visual enhancements—such as the new faces and shared album support—are now universal for compatible models. Apple has confirmed that the first developer beta is already available for testing. The final public version of iOS 27.3 is expected to launch in December, bringing these revamped smart display features to millions of users worldwide. This move effectively bridges the gap between the specialized foldable experience and the traditional iPhone lineup, ensuring that the most modern interface designs are accessible to a broader user base.
