George Madgwick Charged With Multiple Serious Offences

Legal Proceedings Against George Madgwick
George Madgwick, the leader of the Reform group on the Hampshire county council, has been charged with a series of serious crimes. The charges include 12 counts of rape and one count of distributing indecent images of a child. These allegations follow a police investigation into claims involving four complainants who were aged 16 and 17 at the time of the alleged incidents. The events are said to have occurred in Portsmouth and Wales between 2008 and 2021.
On January 6, officers arrested the 37-year-old man at a residence in Wandsworth, London. In addition to the rape charges, the Crown Prosecution Service has brought forward a wide array of other allegations. These include eight counts of actual bodily harm, two counts of assault by penetration, and two counts of sexual assault. Furthermore, he faces two charges of controlling and coercive behavior, two charges of making an indecent image of a child, and one charge of distributing such an image.
Additional Criminal Charges And Court Date
The legal case against Madgwick extends beyond sexual offences. He is also charged with one count of stalking, one count of making threats to kill, one count of false imprisonment, one count of criminal damage, one count of theft, and one count of causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child. A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service stated that prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence and that it was in the public interest to bring the case to court. Madgwick is scheduled to appear at the Portsmouth magistrates court on November 25.
The prosecution has reminded all parties that the proceedings are now active and that the defendant maintains the right to a fair trial. Consequently, they have requested that there be no reporting or commentary that could prejudice the legal process.
Political Career And Suspension
Following the announcement of the charges, a spokesperson for Reform UK confirmed that Councillor Madgwick has been suspended from the party with immediate effect. The news has prompted reactions from other political figures, including the Labour party chair, Bridget Phillipson, who described the charges as shocking and called for transparency regarding whether party leadership was aware of the allegations or the arrest.
Madgwick’s political trajectory began as an independent on the Portsmouth city council, where he won his seat in 2021. He later joined Reform UK in 2025 and subsequently became a Hampshire councillor representing the North East Havant area. Within the council, he rose to a position of significance, becoming the leader of the Reform group and the chair of the council’s corporate services and resources select committee. His party was the third-largest group on the authority, trailing the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
Public Profile And Local Activity
Beyond his administrative roles, Madgwick was a visible figure in local Portsmouth affairs. He was notably linked to protests concerning the arrival of asylum seekers via small boats. During these events, he spoke to the media, emphasizing the need for peaceful protests while stating that local residents were rightly unhappy with the situation.
He was also involved in a specific incident where protesters gathered outside a local hotel. The crowd had mistakenly identified Pakistan’s under-19s cricket team as asylum seekers. Madgwick acted as a mediator, calling the hotel and persuading the protesters to leave the premises. He later described the event as a massively unfortunate incident but suggested it was understandable given the prevailing coverage of asylum seekers arriving in the city. Following these events, Madgwick had used social media to express his views on local governance and community concerns before the current legal charges were made public.
